Gendered Language: X-Men, X-Women, or X-People?

This past Wednesday, the female-lead X-Men #1 by Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel hit the stands. The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive and I’m happy to report that it’s well worth a buy.

The series’ all-woman cast has led to a lively Internet discussion with many questioning the appropriateness of the comic’s gendered title. At first, I thought there might be some validity to the criticism, but the more I reflect on Marvel’s decision, the more I think that they made the right call. The X-Women Are Taking Over ‘X-Men’ this April

X-Women starring in X-Men as part of Marvel NOW!News broke this week that Brian Wood and Olivier Coipe’s new on-going X-Men title will feature an all-female cast.

And as if that wasn’t enough to get me excited about the book, Wood recently told USA Today that X-Men will star Jubilee. I’ll be honest; I’m a sucker for anything with a well-written Jubliee. Throw in Storm, Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Rachel Grey, and Psylocke, and it’s a who’s who of my favorite X-Men.
