Sex, Race, and Sexual Orientation in the Justice League (Part 1 of the Six Month Superhero Census)

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, CyborgAs you know, a couple of weeks ago I presented “A Superhero Census: Sex, Race, and Sexual Orientation in the X-Men, Avengers, and Justice League” at Dragon*Con as part of the 5th Annual Comics & Popular Arts Conference.

Now that the lecture is over, I’d like to share my quantitative six months results, starting with the Justice League! Continue reading ‘Sex, Race, and Sexual Orientation in the Justice League (Part 1 of the Six Month Superhero Census)’

Some of my Dragon*Con swag

I’m still unpacking and recuperating from Dragon*Con but I wanted to share some of the great stuff I got!

I was super excited to get Kevin Eastman to sign my copy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I also picked up a copy of Writing for Comics and Graphic Novels from Peter David who was gracious enough to sign for me. Continue reading ‘Unpacking From Dragon*Con 2012’

Another Great Year at Dragon*Con

Me talking to a couple of folks after “The Superhero as The Other.”

I’m back from this year’s Dragon*Con and I had a great time!

I just wanted to put up a quick post to thank all of the people who came out to see me present at “The Superhero As The Other” and at “The Status of Women in Mainstream Comics” panel (the latter of which I was a last minute addition on). We had a great turnout and an amazing audience at both. In fact, all of the Comics and Popular Arts Conference presentations that I attended had solid turnouts and many were standing room only.

Stay tuned for more Dragon*Con talk in the coming weeks!

My Superhero Census Abstract for Dragon*Con 2012

Cyclops, Wolverine, Beast, Emma Frost, Kitty Pryde, ColossusAs I mentioned in my last post, I’m ecstatic to be presenting “A Superhero Census: Sex, Race, and Sexual Orientation in the X-Men, Avengers, and Justice League” at the 5th Annual Comics & Popular Arts Conference being held at Dragon*Con 2012.

Central themes of the X-Men comics include alienation, otherness, and being born different, but does the team actually practice what they preach? Are the X-Men really as diverse as they would like us to think? How do the demographics of the X-Men compare to that of  real world national averages and to other superhero teams such as The Avengers and the Justice League? Continue reading ‘My Superhero Census Abstract for Dragon*Con 2012’

Dragon*Con 2011 Highlights

Patriot, Hulking, & Wiccan cosplay at Dragon*Con 2012

As previous mentioned, Dragon*Con went well. There’s so much going on that I always feel like I’m missing something, but I did manage to make it to a few Comics & Popular Arts Conference presentations. Theresa Fine-Pawsey’s “Incognegro and the Legacy of Lynching” and Christopher Belanger’s
“Counterfactual Cognition and Ethical Dilemmas: Lessons from Duncan The Wonder Dog” were both quite interesting despite the fact that I Continue reading ‘Dragon*Con 2011 Highlights’
